When we don't listen we're less likely to succeed. If you don't listen to your teachers you won't learn, that is one example. Then when you realize that you need to pass but its already too late for that. You become a drop out. But lets say that you did pay attention you would have a good education a  nice job and your future is looking bright. that is what Faust is trying to say you need obedience to become a building block or face the repercussions when you're a stumbling block.
